Hélder Cunha — biography

Hélder Cunha is a winemaker with more than 25 years in the profession and the founder of Casca Wines. He began his training on a harvest at Kent Rasmussen Winery in Napa Valley (2000), and continued it in Germany at the Fachhochschule Wiesbaden in Geisenheim, with harvests in the Mosel and the Rheingau. He returned to Portugal with a clear goal: to give voice to Portuguese terroirs that deserved to be heard.

Before founding Casca Wines in 2008, he led winemaking at Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges and worked at VDS — Vinhos do Douro Superior. He holds a WSET Level 3 certification (2005) and has been an international judge since 2003, with ten consecutive years on the panel of the International Wine Challenge in London. Across his career, his wines have earned two Grande Medalha de Ouro at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles — one made at Sociedade dos Vinhos Borges (2005 vintage), the other under Casca Wines’ own Bote label (2018 vintage).

In 2013, he conceived, produced and hosted “Rotas do Vinho,” a documentary series for Portuguese broadcaster SIC on the country’s wine regions. Between 2017 and 2020 he led the house’s sustainability work — organic grapes, minimal-intervention wines, a vegan range. He was filmed in Portugal in 2020 for the Portugal episode of “Uncharted with Gordon Ramsay,” a National Geographic series with Gordon Ramsay (season 3, episode 2), which premiered in Portugal on 15 October 2021. In 2024 he created the concept of Drinkfulness — drinking with presence, less and better — which now guides the house’s wine club, The Cellar Table, launched in 2025.

Recognition

For over a decade, Casca Wines’ bottlings have been reviewed blind by Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss — thirteen consecutive years, 2011 to 2024. Three wines, all from Monte Cascas, reached 93 points, the highest score the house has received; two further wines, from 1808 and Cabo da Roca, were named the magazine’s Editors’ Choice.

Cascas, the house’s restaurant-only line — poured by the glass and by the bottle in a select group of restaurants, not sold through this site — has the most consistent value record in the range: eight of its ten Wine Enthusiast reviews carried the magazine’s “Best Buy” seal.
