Description
Cascale Petroleiro 2022 — palhete fermented and aged in clay amphora
Red and white varieties picked and fermented together in talha, the Roman clay vessel still used in Portugal. Sealed for eight months, then bottled. Organic, 11.6% alcohol.
Palhete is the old Portuguese answer to the question of what happens when red and white grapes share a vineyard and a press. Here it is Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Rufete, Síria, Terrantez da Beira and Fonte Cal, from a vineyard 155 kilometres inland at 650 metres, on granite with some quartz, Royat-trained on the high plain.
Certified organic. Harvested in the first week of September. The grapes are crushed straight into clay talha and ferment there for twelve days; the vessel is then sealed and the wine rests inside it for around eight months, in contact with its own lees and the clay itself. Nothing else is added or taken away.
The colour gives the wine its name — an oily, petrol-tinged hue. Cherry, resin and wet clay on the nose. Fine-grained tannin, medium weight, a fresh and persistent finish.
Serve at 12 ºC. Drink through 2033. Pairs with cheese, cured sausage and roast meat. First vintage produced: 2019.
