Portugal’s rarest red. Ungrafted Ramisco from the sands of Colares — pale, austere, 11% alcohol and forty years of cellaring.

Description

Monte Cascas Ramisco de Colares 2014 — the rarest red in Portugal, and one built for forty years

100% Ramisco from ungrafted vines over 80 years old, planted in sand beside the Atlantic. Light in colour, austere, mineral, 11% alcohol and a cellaring window to 2065.

Ramisco grows almost nowhere else. These vines stand within a kilometre of the ocean at 106 to 111 metres, own-rooted in sand over hard clay — the soil that kept phylloxera out and kept the variety alive. They are trained in horizontal cordons across the sand, lifted on props six to eight weeks before harvest, and they are over eighty years old.

Cool damp summers, fog and salt wind. Hand-picked in the second and third weeks of September. Thirty per cent partial destemming, crushing into lagar, three days of cold maceration, twelve days of temperature-controlled fermentation, gentle foot treading twice a day and 22 days of cuvaison. Malolactic in new barrels, then 18 months in French oak. 11% alcohol.

Pale red. The nose is vegetal and earthy with dried roses. The palate is elegant and austere, earth and mineral held in balance, the finish long and quiet.

Serve at 14 ºC. Cellaring 2025–2065. Drink on its own, or with mushrooms or filet mignon. First vintage produced: 2009.
