Description
Monte Cascas Reserva White Douro 2022 — barrel-fermented Viosinho from schist and white granite
Two vineyards at 570 and 640 metres, fermented in barrel with fortnightly bâtonnage and aged six months in seasoned oak.
Douro whites are made at altitude, and these two plots sit high: one 49 years old on schist at 570 metres, the other thirteen years old on white granite at 640 metres, both around 115 kilometres from the coast in mountain continental climate.
The blend is 60% Viosinho, 30% Gouveio and 10% Códega do Larinho, hand-harvested across the first and third weeks of September. Direct pressing, four hours of crushing with passive oxygenation, 24 hours of settling, then fermentation in barrel with bâtonnage every fortnight. Six months in barrels of two to three years’ use. 13% alcohol.
Lemon in colour. Pineapple and stone fruit on the nose over a mineral base. The palate is creamy in texture with acidity held in balance.
Serve at 13 ºC. Cellaring 2025–2035. Pairs with goat’s cheese, oysters, grilled fish and seafood risotto. First vintage produced: 2006.
