Description
Monte Cascas Reserva Red Douro 2019 — four old terraced vineyards between 360 and 540 metres
Touriga Franca leads a Douro blend drawn from vines of 45, 52, 28 and 61 years, hand-picked on schist and aged twelve months in used French oak.
The fruit comes from four separate terraced plots in the Douro, spread between 360 and 540 metres and ranging from 28 to 61 years old. Three are Royat-trained; one keeps the old bush training. The climate is mountain continental with hot dry summers, the soil is schist throughout.
The blend is 70% Touriga Franca, 20% Touriga Nacional and 10% Tinta Roriz, hand-harvested in the first week of September. Destemmed and crushed, three days of cold maceration, fermentation running from 12 ºC to 32 ºC, malolactic in French oak, then twelve months in used French barrels. 14.5% alcohol.
Ruby red. Black fruit, rockrose, cereal, coffee and caramel on the nose. The palate is full and complex, firm and elegant in structure, with a fresh, persistent finish.
Serve at 18 ºC. Cellaring 2021–2031. Pairs with aged sheep’s and cow’s milk cheese such as São Jorge, steak tartare, veal stew or a good steak. First vintage produced: 2007.
